Soul fragmentation — Daniel Duval

BRIDE Ministries: soul parts, the core soul, and internal worlds

Description

Daniel Duval, founder of BRIDE Ministries International, has developed an extensive model for working with soul fragmentation, dissociation, and spiritual captivity. In his teaching, a human being consists of body, soul, and spirit. He describes the soul as the realm of the conscious mind, will, emotions, and intellect, distinguishing it from the spirit.

Duval teaches that under the impact of severe trauma, a part of the soul can split away from the whole. Such a fragment does not cease to exist. In his view, it can continue to hold memories, emotions, and pain connected with the event during which the fragmentation occurred.

BRIDE Ministries describes fragmentation as occurring in varying degrees of severity. Not every fragment develops into a fully distinct part with its own identity. In more severe cases, Duval connects this model with dissociation and DID, in which individual parts can function at different levels of awareness.

An important term in his teaching is the “core soul.” Duval describes it as the original, primary “self” and the central area of a person’s will. He teaches that in very deep fragmentation, the core soul can retreat into hiding while one of the fragments takes over the role of the person functioning in everyday life.

For this reason, Duval does not automatically assume that the part of a person present during ministry is the core soul. In his view, a fragment that is “out front” may possess only part of the person’s total will. In his model, this matters for deliverance because effective consent and cooperation require reaching more deeply hidden parts and ultimately the core soul.

Duval very clearly distinguishes a soul fragment from a demon. A fragment is, in his view, part of the person himself or herself. It should not be treated as an unclean spirit and cast out. The goal of ministry to a fragment is to find it, bring it to Jesus, receive healing, and reconnect it with the whole person.

In his teaching, however, demonic spirits can attach themselves to fragments. A particular case is a structure referred to as a “Composite.” Duval describes it as a connection in which a demonic entity surrounds or wraps itself around a fragment of the human soul. Outwardly, such a structure can, in his view, manifest in a way similar to a demon, but it contains a real part of the person.

Duval therefore teaches that one should not simply command the entire structure to leave. The human part must first be separated from the demonic element.

In BRIDE Ministries, prayer involving “Living Water” is used for such a separation. Duval describes asking God for angels to place the Composite into the Living Water, which in his model separates the demonic element from the human fragment. After the separation, the demon is removed, while the soul fragment remains and receives further ministry as part of the person.

Another characteristic element of Duval’s teaching is “internal worlds.” In his model of dissociation, he describes a person’s inner structure using the image of an airplane. The “cockpit” corresponds to the part functioning in everyday life, while behind it there may be other parts, separated by amnesia barriers and hidden at different levels of the internal world.

According to Duval, some fragments can be located in prisons within the internal world. Others can be taken outside it into what he calls “regions of captivity.”

Duval describes regions of captivity as actual places in the spiritual realm where soul fragments can be held by the enemy or by people serving darkness. Among the biblical foundations he gives for this teaching are Ezekiel 13, with its image of hunting souls, and Revelation 18, where the merchandise of Babylon includes the souls of human beings.

In his teachings, Duval also describes cases in which fragments were said to have been found during ministry in spiritual places of captivity, in objects, or in structures connected with witchcraft. In one example he gives, a fragment is found in a vessel belonging to a person involved in witchcraft. In other materials, BRIDE also speaks of fragments connected with objects, locations, and complex spiritual structures.

Duval’s approach to ministry begins by inviting Jesus to act within the person’s internal world. The person is then to pay attention to what Jesus shows and where He leads. Duval emphasizes that the next steps depend on what is revealed: a soul fragment, a hidden core soul, a place of captivity, or a Composite requiring separation may emerge.

Soul fragments are treated in this process as parts of the person. Duval describes direct communication with them, bringing them into an encounter with Jesus, and working with what they carry. The goal is not to remove them, but to recover and reintegrate them.

Duval also teaches that fragmentation need not be limited to the soul alone. In later BRIDE materials, three kinds are distinguished: soul fragments, joined soul-and-spirit fragments, and fragments of the spirit itself. He emphasizes that soul and spirit are distinct components of a person and that ministry involving spirit fragments should be handled separately from ministry to soul parts.

In making this distinction, he refers among other passages to 1 Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12. He teaches that a person’s soul and spirit can be in different conditions and that in very severe fragmentation it may be necessary to address each of these areas separately.

The central goal, however, remains the recovery of what has been scattered or held captive and bringing it under the lordship of Jesus Christ. Duval refers especially to Psalm 23:3 — “He restores my soul” — and treats the restoration of the soul as the actual restoration of its broken parts.

In BRIDE’s model, deliverance and inner healing are therefore connected. An unclean spirit is to be removed, but a fragment of the person is to be preserved, recovered, and brought to Jesus. This distinction between what belongs to the person and what is demonic is one of the most important elements of Duval’s teaching on fragmentation.
