Reiki
An “energy healing” practice transmitted through initiation
Description
Reiki is a practice that originated in Japan in the early twentieth century and is presented as healing through the transmission of “universal life energy.” According to its underlying beliefs, this ability is received during a ritual called initiation or attunement.
The practitioner is then supposed to direct energy toward another person through touch or at a distance.
Christian objections to Reiki concern its spiritual assumptions. Biblical healing is a gift from God and a work of the Holy Spirit, rather than the transmission of an impersonal power that a person activates through a ritual or directs according to their own will.
Symptoms / signs
People seeking support after contact with Reiki sometimes describe unease, recurring disturbing dreams, difficulty in Christian prayer, a sense of a “presence” accompanying them, or sensations interpreted as a flow of energy. Growing dependence on further treatments is also a warning sign.
Possible roots / causes
Involvement may include receiving Reiki treatments, undergoing “energy scanning,” going through initiations at various levels, and treating others. The conscious acceptance of the beliefs and spiritual commitments associated with this practice, and treating energy as a source of healing, also matter.
Help / what next
Stop both receiving and practising Reiki. Confess your involvement to God and renounce this practice, including participation in initiations and the spiritual commitments you accepted. Turn to Jesus Christ as Lord and the source of life and healing. You may also ask someone serving in ministry for a conversation and prayer for forgiveness, cleansing, and deliverance.
