Put Down Roots in Christ

A.B. Simpson

“I am the vine; you are the branches” — John 15:5.

“How can I receive Christ as my Sanctifier or Healer?” is a question we are constantly asked. First of all, we need to take a position of faith. This requires a definite and voluntary act, and then it must be maintained as a consistent habit.

It is just like planting a tree. You must place it in the soil by a definite act. Then you must let it stay there, settled in the ground, until the little roots have time to anchor themselves and begin drawing nourishment from the soil. There are two stages: the definite planting, and then the habitual absorption of moisture and nourishment from the ground. The root fibers must remain undisturbed until they extend their sponge-like pores and drink in the nourishment of the earth. Once the habit is established, the plant draws its life from the ground without effort, according to a consistent law. Growing becomes as natural to it as breathing is to us.

Lord, help me today to remain in You and to grow into the habit of drawing all my life from Yours, so that it will be true of me: “In Him I live and move and have my being.”
