Living to Be a Blessing

A.B. Simpson

“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” — Philippians 1:21.

The secret of a sound body is a sound heart. The Holy Spirit’s prayer for us is that we may enjoy health and prosperity, just as our soul prospers.

In the letter to the Philippians, we find Paul expressing a sublime and holy freedom of heart concerning life or death. Indeed, he is torn between the two: would he rather “depart and be with Christ,” or remain in the body?

The first would indeed be his dearest preference. Yet the second would also be joyful service. His only reason for wanting to live is to be a blessing. “To remain in the body is more necessary for you.”

Once his heart has reached this state, it is beautiful to notice how quickly he rises to the victorious faith needed to claim full strength and health. Because it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body, he adds, “I know that I will remain and continue with you all, for your progress and joy in the faith.” Lord, help me today not to count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my course with joy and the ministry I have received from Jesus.
