Hold Fast to What Is Good

“Hold fast to what is good” — 1 Thessalonians 5:21.
It is a great thing to be able to receive new truth and blessing without sacrificing truths already tested or abandoning foundations already laid.
Some people are always laying foundations. In the end, they resemble a collection of abandoned building sites and half-finished buildings. Nothing is ever brought to completion.
If today you abandon, for some new truth, what only a year ago you considered most precious and believed to be truth from God, that should be evidence enough that a year from now you will probably abandon your present convictions for the next new light that reaches you.
God continually wants to enrich us, develop us, enlarge our capacity, and teach us more and more. Yet He always does so in keeping with what He has already taught us and in which we have been established.
So let us test everything while also holding fast to what is good. “In what we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule and remain of the same mind.”
