Bring Every Matter to God

A.B. Simpson

“Pray without ceasing” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

An important help in the life of prayer is the habit of bringing everything to God, moment by moment, as it comes into our lives. This habit can be formed as all habits are formed: through constant, repeated attention, until what begins as an act of will becomes spontaneous and second nature.

If we pay attention to our lives, we will find that God meets the things we commit to Him in prayer with a special blessing. Often He allows even the best things we have not committed to Him to remain fruitless, reminding us that we depend on Him for everything.

How gracious and attentive He is to lead us so gently to remember Him! He holds us so close that we cannot move away from His all-sustaining arm even for a single minute. “In everything […] let us make our requests known to God.”

Let us bring our smallest petitions,
like incense finely ground.
All our cares, complaints, and circumstances—
Jesus loves to bear them all.
