Spirit of disappointment

When disappointed hope becomes an entry point for loneliness and despair

Point of discernment

Derek Prince describes a particular woman whose broken engagement brought deep disappointment. In his discernment, she yielded to a spirit of disappointment at the moment of wounding. Prince then presents a possible sequence: disappointment moves toward loneliness, misery and suffering, then depression, and finally self-destruction or suicide. This is his map of escalating bondage, not the inevitable future of every disappointed person.

Present pattern

Established disappointment, withdrawal after loss, loneliness, belief that the future holds nothing good, deepening suffering, hopelessness, and thoughts of self-destruction.

Possible root

A broken expectation or relationship, abandonment, betrayal, an unfulfilled promise, or a loss after which the person agreed with disappointment and closed themselves to hope.

Effect

Isolation, loss of hope, deepening suffering, vulnerability to depression, and — in Prince’s sequence — self-destruction and suicidal thoughts.

Discernment without accusation

Do not accuse a person for experiencing loss or pain. Discern agreement with hopelessness and an established sequence, remembering that Prince describes a possibility, not an automatic course.

Spiritual response

Name the loss before God; forgive the offender without excusing harm; renounce the spirit of disappointment, loneliness, misery, suffering, depression, self-destruction, and death; revoke agreement with hopelessness; receive presence, comfort, and a future from Jesus; ask trusted people to remain alongside.
