Strife, quarrelsomeness and fighting

An entrenched pattern of discord

Point for discernment

In “Pigs in the Parlor”, Frank and Ida Mae Hammond identify a STRIFE group. They include discord, bickering, arguing, quarrelling and fighting in it. This does not mean every difference of opinion or calmly setting a boundary, but an entrenched pattern in which conflict becomes a way of responding and maintaining division.

Present pattern

Repeated bickering, a need to argue, raising tension, provoking quarrels, fighting for the last word and difficulty building peace.

Possible root

The STRIFE list does not identify a single root. What is actually present should be discerned: unforgiveness, bitterness, entrenched anger, rivalry, jealousy, pride and control.

Influence

Divisions, loss of peace and trust, hurtful words, growing hostility and the destruction of home, marriage, community or work.

Spiritual response

Confess one's own part in the conflict; forgive and ask for forgiveness where appropriate and safe; renounce the spirit of strife, discord, quarrelling and fighting; give up the need to win; receive the peace, humility and gentleness of the Holy Spirit; take concrete steps to repair the relationship.
