Asmodeus—Lust and the Destruction of Bonds

The Evil Spirit from the Book of Tobit and Subsequent Teaching

Description

Asmodeus is one of the few evil spirits explicitly named in the Book of Tobit. Tobit 3:8 states that he killed Sarah’s seven successive husbands before their marriages were consummated. Later, Raphael guides Tobias, and Tobias and Sarah’s wedding night begins with a joint prayer to God. In the text of the Book of Tobit itself, Asmodeus thus appears primarily as an adversary of marriage and of the lives of Sarah’s husbands.

Later tradition began to associate Asmodeus particularly with lust. Contemporary deliverance ministries expand on this interpretation, linking his influence to persistent sexual bondage, pornography, immorality, infidelity, and behaviors that lead to the destruction of relationships and marriages.

Miguel Bustillos / The Children’s Bread Deliverance Ministry describes Asmodeus as a demonic influence associated with lust and destruction in the sexual realm. In this context, a person increasingly loses freedom over their own desires. Pornography, compulsive sexual behavior, infidelity, or repeatedly crossing boundaries begin to exert an ever-greater influence on one’s way of life.

What may initially have been a single sin or compromise can, over time, develop into permanent bondage. This leads to secrecy, a double life, a loss of self-control, the breaking of commitments, and an increasing difficulty in remaining faithful. Relationships begin to be subordinated to lust, and trust between people is gradually destroyed.

This has a particularly severe impact on marriage and lasting bonds. Infidelity, pornography, and sexual coercion can lead to estrangement, a loss of intimacy, betrayal, and recurring conflicts. In this sense, later teachings about Asmodeus refer to a theme already present in the Book of Tobit—actions directed against the marital bond.

The path to freedom lies in acknowledging and renouncing one’s own sin. Where a person has consciously persisted in pornography, fornication, infidelity, sexual manipulation, or other forms of immorality, it is necessary to confess this before God, repent, and decisively break away from whatever sustained that bondage.

If disordered relationships have arisen through sexual sin, they can be surrendered to God and any consent to continued involvement can be revoked. This renunciation also includes Asmodeus and the associated influences of lust, pornography, infidelity, and sexual coercion.

If such a spiritual influence is recognized, one can command it to depart in the name of Jesus Christ. The next step is to rebuild purity, faithfulness, self-control, and the relationships that were previously affected by sin and bondage.

The story of Tobias and Sarah ultimately leads not to the destruction of their marriage, but to shared prayer, God’s protection, and the restoration of their ability to live in the bond of marriage.
