Python

Divination and spiritual oppression

Description

In Acts 16:16, the Greek text speaks of a girl who has a “spirit of Python” — pneuma pythōna — usually translated as a spirit of divination. The name refers to the Greek context of the Delphic oracle. Paul commanded the spirit to come out of the girl in the name of Jesus Christ.

Derek Prince discusses this term in connection with divination. Vlad Savchuk and HungryGen also use the contemporary category “spirit of Python,” developing an image of oppression that gradually “tightens” around a person's life.

The immediate core of Acts 16, however, is divination and the spiritual and material exploitation of the girl by her owners. The image of “choking” a person's prayer life, finances, or relationships is a later development and remains attributed to contemporary teachers.

The most important context is actual involvement in divination, mediumship, summoning spirits, and other attempts to gain supernatural knowledge apart from God.

Symptoms / signs

A sense of suffocation and lack of freedom, chronic spiritual fatigue, difficulty praying, a slow “tightening” around finances or relationships.

Possible roots / causes

Divination, clairvoyance, mediumship, summoning spirits, séances, attempts to contact the dead, and other practices seeking supernatural knowledge or guidance apart from the Holy Spirit. Later teachings also point to prolonged spiritual oppression and control.

Doors / context

Actual involvement in divination, mediumship, séances, summoning spirits, the Ouija board, and similar practices. Involvement many years ago or in childhood should also be considered if it actually occurred.

Effects

In the biblical picture: spiritual bondage connected with divination and the exploitation of a person. In contemporary teaching on Python: a gradual restriction of freedom, weakening of prayer life, and a sense of increasing oppression.

Help / what next

Naming specific practices, repenting and renouncing divination and attempts to contact the spiritual world apart from God, closing those areas in prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, and praying for deliverance and the restoration of freedom in Christ.
