Spirit of kundalini
Christian discernment of kundalini practices
Description
Kundalini is a concept originating in the religious and spiritual traditions of India. In kundalini yoga and related systems, it is presented as a dormant energy or power, symbolically associated with a serpent at the base of the spine, which is to be “awakened” through particular practices.
Nelson L. Schuman / Restored to Freedom uses the expression “kundalini spirit” and describes Kundalini as a demonic influence connected with kundalini yoga, mysticism, and practices intended to open a person to this spiritual “energy.”
In his teaching, manifestations include involuntary body movements, shaking, unusual changes in breathing, spontaneous vocalizations, intense sensations of energy flowing through the body, strong emotional reactions, and altered states of consciousness occurring in connection with the practices or with the so-called awakening of Kundalini.
Of particular significance is consciously entering into practices intended to awaken this energy: kundalini yoga undertaken as a spiritual path, initiations conducted by a guru, meditation, mantras, work with chakras, and other practices through which a person opened themselves to Kundalini and the spiritual system connected with it.
In such involvement, the person is not merely seeking physical exercise but a spiritual experience, power, or transformation. The practice becomes a way of opening oneself to a spiritual source other than Jesus Christ.
According to Schuman, this may lead to spiritual bondage, confusion, and bodily and emotional manifestations connected with the activity of Kundalini. This influence may remain even after the practices themselves have ceased if earlier initiations and spiritual agreements have not been broken.
The path to freedom begins with consciously ending Kundalini practices and turning away from the spiritual source to which the person had previously opened themselves. It includes renouncing Kundalini, initiations, mantras, meditation, chakra work, and other practices and spiritual commitments connected with this system.
If the practices involved objects intended for worship, initiation, or spiritual rituals, a person can also stop using them and remove them from their life.
In Schuman’s teaching, prayer for deliverance includes confronting the kundalini spirit and related influences and commanding them to leave in the name of Jesus Christ. The person gives back to God the areas previously opened to Kundalini and asks the Holy Spirit to cleanse and fill them.
