Water spirits (marine spirits)

Water cults, rituals, and territorial spirits

Description

The expression “marine spirits,” or “spirits of the waters,” is used in some contemporary deliverance ministries, particularly in teaching developed in Africa and in settings that have encountered water-related cults, Mami Wata, local deities, rituals, and the concept of “spirit spouses.”

In the book “Overcoming Familiar Spirits,” Kynan Bridges describes marine spirits as a kind of territorial spirit. Drawing on ministry experience in West Africa, he connects their activity primarily with seduction, manipulation, bondage through lust, and sexual attacks during sleep. In the same teaching he also connects them with Mami Wata and with experiences described as incubus or succubus.

Susan Haddad, in “Disarming Marine Spirits and Powers,” likewise places the subject in the context of spiritual warfare and deliverance. Of particular importance in this teaching are actual connections with the worship of water deities: rituals, initiations, dedications, oaths, magical practices, and knowingly turning to such spirits.

Such involvement may lead to spiritual bondage sustained by earlier vows, covenants, or initiations. Teaching concerning marine spirits also refers to recurring sexual attacks during sleep, linked with the concept of a “spirit spouse” and the activity of an incubus or succubus.

The path to freedom leads through a concrete break with what the person actually participated in. If rituals, dedications, oaths, or initiations connected with water cults took place, a person can confess their own participation, renounce the named deities, spirits, and practices, and revoke earlier spiritual commitments.

The person can then declare their exclusive belonging to Jesus Christ and reject every agreement with continuing bondage. If a specific demonic influence is discerned, it can be confronted in the authority of Jesus Christ, commanded to leave, and God can be asked for complete deliverance.
