Spirit of unbelief
Unbelief, doubt, and difficulty trusting God
Description
In Mk 9:24, the father cries out to Jesus: “I believe; help my unbelief.” The Bible shows that a person may want to believe while also struggling with unbelief. Derek Prince and Frank and Ida Mae Hammond also describe unbelief and doubt as areas of possible activity by the spiritual adversary.
Honest questions, a crisis of faith, and searching for answers are not the same as an entrenched pattern that continually undermines trust in God, his Word, and his promises. Such a pattern may lead to cynicism, weaken prayer, and close a person off to what God says.
Unbelief may be sustained by disappointment, prayers not answered in the expected way, hurt, a mistaken image of God, or repeatedly disappointed hopes. Healing these wounds and prayer for deliverance may be part of the same journey toward regaining trust.
The goal is not a forced declaration, but the renewal of living faith, trust in God, and a willingness to receive his Word.
Symptoms / signs
Difficulty trusting God's promises, chronic doubt despite evidence, cynicism toward faith, resistance to prayer and the Word.
Possible roots / causes
Disappointment with God, prayers not answered in the expected way, hurt caused by people representing the faith, an upbringing without faith or with a distorted image of God, repeatedly disappointed hopes, and deliberately cultivated cynicism.
Doors / context
Deliberately and persistently feeding unbelief, rejecting truth despite the conviction of the heart, cultivating cynicism, and spiritual wounds or disappointments that have not been worked through and forgiven.
Effects
Spiritual stagnation, weakened prayer, difficulty receiving God's promises, growing cynicism, withdrawal from the community, and gradually drifting away from a relationship with God.
Help / what next
Bringing unbelief and disappointment to God without pretending, repenting where there is deliberate rebellion or rejection of truth, forgiving people connected with the hurt, feeding on God's Word, and praying for faith to be rebuilt and for deliverance from the spirit of unbelief.
