Spirit of religion

Legalism and religious form without life

Description

The term “spirit of religion” is not a biblical name for a specific demon. It is a contemporary expression used in deliverance teaching. Frank and Ida Mae Hammond identify a group associated with religiousness, while Nelson Schuman and Vlad Savchuk also describe the work of a religious spirit.

The biblical background is a form of religion in which outward practice replaces genuine surrender to God. Jesus quotes Isaiah: “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me” (Mark 7:6), and then warns against placing human tradition above God’s command.

This pattern is marked by legalism, religious pride, judging others, controlling them through rules, and clinging to outward correctness without a changed heart. A person may build a sense of security and self-worth on keeping regulations while losing a living relationship with God and the ability to receive his grace.

Tradition, liturgy, spiritual discipline, and concern for sound doctrine are not problems in themselves. The decisive question is whether they lead to God, humility, and obedience to truth, or whether they replace relationship with him.

Symptoms / signs

Outward piety without a real relationship with God, judging others by external standards, resisting the work of the Holy Spirit.

Possible roots / causes

Legalistic religious upbringing, religious pride, fear of rejection by the group, building self-esteem on following the rules, controlling religious environment and putting human tradition above the Word of God.

Doors / context

Consciously building identity on religious superiority, legalism, putting human rules above the Word, controlling others through religion and persistently choosing form instead of truth and change of heart.

Effects

Judging and controlling others, spiritual pride, dead form without a change of heart, divisions in the community, fear of grace and freedom, and resistance to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Help / what next

Repentance from pride, judgment and legalism, forgiveness where a person has been hurt by controlling religiosity, returning to the Word and a living relationship with God, and praying for freedom from the pattern of religious control.
