Spirit of muteness and deafness
The biblical deaf and mute spirit
Description
Mark 9:17–29 describes a specific case in which Jesus addresses a “deaf and mute spirit” directly and commands it to leave the boy. This is therefore not a name created later by deliverance ministries, but a designation found in the biblical account itself.
The boy’s father tells Jesus that the spirit deprives his son of speech, throws him down, causes foaming at the mouth, grinding of teeth, and rigidity. It also tries to kill him by throwing him into fire and water. When Jesus sees the boy, He does not address only the symptoms but speaks directly to the spirit and commands it to leave.
Derek Prince recounts a similar approach in his testimony from ministry in Pakistan. He describes a deaf-mute man toward whom he addressed the “deaf and dumb spirit” and commanded it to leave in the name of Jesus Christ. According to Prince’s account, the man later began to hear.
In Mark 9, the activity of this spirit involved actual muteness and was combined with severe seizures and attempts to destroy the boy. The biblical picture is therefore far more specific than later, broader applications of the term to communication difficulties or a sense of spiritual “blockage.”
Some contemporary ministries also use the name “deaf and mute spirit” in reference to severe blocks in speaking, listening, or communicating. The primary point of reference, however, remains Mark 9, where Jesus discerns an actual spiritual influence and responds to it with a direct command.
The biblical response is simple. Jesus does not converse or negotiate with the spirit, but uses authority and commands it to leave. If such an influence is discerned, the deaf and mute spirit can be commanded in the name of Jesus Christ to leave, while prayer is offered for deliverance and for the restoration of what was affected by its activity.
“You deaf and mute spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again.”
